How good idea is to build a lyrics website on an existing strong site

I have a very strong website 3 years old with lot of backlinks on a 10 year old domain and everything on it ranks it very well. Now I was wondering can I create a sub site on it like music.example.com with lyrics database on it ?

I know there are already tons of website based on lyrics but I may be able to take some leverage from my current site.

Is it a good idea ? :)

Every lyric that is likely to be of interest to a significant number of visitors is protected by copyright; virtually every lyric site out there (and there seem to be thousands) is 90%+ illegal.

So far as I am aware, little has ever been done to enforce copyright owners' rights ... but that does not mean that nothing will ever happen.

How were you proposing to acquire the lyrics for your database?

well I just have the database which I had bought from a person. He sold me the reseller rights but not sure how legal the deal was as I got it pretty cheap.

Anyway assuming I get the site up, I am just wondering how will the site rank considering heavy duplication of content ?

90%+ of the internet is illegal. I wouldn't let it stop you.

You can, but IMHO it would be a bad idea to jeopardize an otherwise well performing domain with something questionable and off-topic.

There are a ton of them, and a good number of them distribute driveby downloads of malware - which is how a computer of mine got turned into a paperweight a few years ago.

If you don't care about being in violation of other people's copyright, which is wrong, regardless of how many others do it IMHO, it would be a much better idea to create a new site on a new domain that has some unique value with some sort of original type of presentation.

I wouldn't touch it. There are 1000's of ideas out there. Why even venture into one with questionable copyright problems right from the start.
