Router blocking website?

I have tried just about everything and cannot figure this one out. I spoke with Time Warner to see if my site was being blocked and it wasn't. Then called Linksys to see what they could do.. they had me change the MTU to 1400 and the security settings off and update the firmware -- that all did nothing. I ran a virus check on my computer that did nothing. The site comes up when it is connected directly to the modem instead of the linksys router. So I have no idea why it is not coming up when its connected to the linksys.

I have spent a few days on this and cannot figure it out for the life of me.

If you're using Windows check the hosts file and see if the site is listed there.

No, I did not see it listed in the Hosts file. I am still clueless to what is causing this.

Did you hook up a different computer to the router and get the same result?

Can you ping the site?

Is your site hosted locally or somewhere else? And is it a new problem that just started, or has it always been a problem with the Linksys.

DNS server in the Linksys- have you tried manually pointing them to a public DNS server rather than let it pick up the ISPs?

Yes, tried to ping the site and get "Request Timed Out."

Also tried a different computer to the router and had the same result.

The site is hosted somewhere else and the problem has been going on ever since some database error on the site. So I was thinking the router thought my site had a virus and blocked it somehow but I am just not sure what is causing this.

DNS Server in the Linksys - I have not tried this. Do you mean using DynDNS.org instead of having the DDNS disabled?

Have you tried accessing the site though a proxy? Can people on other ISPs see the site?

Yeah I can view it when I go through a proxy and I can see it on other networks. It comes up in all the search engines just not on my computer for some reason.. it just times out when i try and access this particular site going through my linksys.

Try unplugging the cable going into your router and plugging that directly into the machine. That would eliminate whether it's a router issue.

Take the proper security precautions before trying this.

Yeah that was one of the first things I have done. It goes to the site when it is connected directly to the modem.

I guess no one else has had this happen before?

I missed that in your original post.
So it's a straight router issue? Do you have any odd firmware in there? Does the router have any parental/site filtering capability enabled?

re: DNS

No, just google for an IP of a public DNS server. In the router settings, there will be an option for DNS, set to 'obtain autmatially from ISP'.

You can change this to manual, then nominate a primary and secondary DNS server.

Can you use other services like Telnet / FTP / HTTPS, what comes up when you do a Traceroute? Auto proxyconfig in IE perhaps?

Does your router have a "reset" button that resets everything in it to factory defaults?

fyi: the "reset" button on these devices is typically hidden in a hole and accessible with a paper clip or similar tool.

Further to pressing the button, there are sometimes arcane procedures to do a 'hard reset'.

These are something like
1) Hold reset for 30 sec
2) WHILE HOLDING RESET, pull power out for 30 secs
3) WHILE HOLDING RESET, reconnect power
4) Sacrafice a chicken to the Great God Om, and beware of falling tortoises.
(number 4 is probably optional)

Hold on a sec, with your router configured normally you're able to view other sites but not yours? Then why mess with the router? Are you absolutely sure your hosting provider is not blocking Time Warner's IP range?

caribguy, the OP says
The site comes up when it is connected directly to the modem instead of the linksys router.

Yes, I can read too :) Usually, the ISP will assign specific IP ranges for various types of users. So if the OP is able to connect using his modem, chances are that he's being assigned a different subnet...

Mmmm. Here in the UK, your user 'type' is defined by your line and/or authentication details. One of the (now bough-out) cable companies used to use MAC addresses to identify the authorised device was connecting to it's modem, but I'm not aware of the ability of the ISP to identify different DHCP requests and allocate IPs accordingly.

I'm not saying you're wrong, just that I'm not aware. And I'm certainly without any useful knowledge of other countries' ISP set-ups or authentication procedures. (And as the OP is in Texas, I should probably bow out gracefully here)

Hi

I just started having the exact same issue. I can not get to my 3 sites or webmail from my 3 systems at work. But no issue from home or anywhere else for that matter. I spoke to the hosting company, Time Warner and Linksys, and it's like chasing your tail. Linksys had me do the same MTU changes and firmware update. The sites come up when I connect directly to the modem so TW says it's not thier issue. And the hosting company who has my sites say the problem is not on thier end.

Were you able to find the problem?

TIA
