Will site rank change if banner removed

I have a site using free hosting that has a banner placed at the top of the page.

If I upgrade and remove the banner, will my site ranking change? Did this banner have anything to do with my site ranking? I currently rank #2 on yahoo for a fantastic search term and I would hate to lose this spot.

If the banner was nothing more than an ad unrelated to your site, it should have no effect.

The banner is the hosting company running Google Adsense

To my knowledge, Google does not look at their own adds when ranking sites since it is not site generated content.

Or if you are really worried, join AdSense and replace with your own banner. Then YOU get the money from the ads, not your hosting company.
