Help with dedicated server

I don't know what I'm doing...

Well, my site exploded recently so today I bought a brand new dedicated server. Problem is, I have little to no idea how to configure a Linux server properly. I know my IP...and that's about it.

I'm running CPanel and WHM for admin on a Windows Vista comp; my goal tonight is to just connect to a FTP. Any FTP.

Also, right off the bat I get a message:

"The hostname ( (my website IP).tpa.sagonet.com) resolves to . It should resolve to (my website IP). Please be sure to correct /etc/hosts as well as the 'A' entry in zone file for the domain.

Some are all of these problems can be caused by
/etc/resolv.conf being setup incorrectly. Please check this file if you
believe everything else is correct."

I'm not asking for step-by-step instructions or anything, but I've looked around for four hours and I'm not finding anything.
I found this tutorial that would have worked perfectly... but it cuts off right when it gets to what I'm looking for. Can anyone help me out or at least point me somewhere so I can learn how to actually use my site?

Do you have a control panel?

Your host may be able to set it up for you too, is it managed?

Cpanel is my control panel, but it's like an old watered down form of CPanel, nothing like I'm used to.

I literally have no idea how to create an FTP account. Supposedly there's an FTP Accounts button to create one according to tutorials but I haven't seen it and I've searched through everything.

I don't know Linux all that well...what could I switch to to make this easier for me? My knowledge of webpage management involves opening up FTP, throwing in my files and an .htaccess, and that's it. I don't understand what 90% of this stuff does for this dedicated server and I'd like to learn it all, but I'm on a time constraint to get my site back up and working.

I'm a newbie myself, still feeling your pain!

But I've gotten past the point of creating ftp accounts and such, my site is online & active for over 4 months (knock on wood).

What version of cpanel do you have? An old version is not recommended as some security enhancements have been released as of late.
Nevertheless, if you have cpanel on a dedicated, you'll likely have WHM.

Go to [[whatever_your_server_IP_is]...]

Login with the credentials your data center given you.

Head to:
Account Functions: Create a New Account -> load the info.

Regardless, if you supply a fake domain, it will still allow you ftp access (just not to that domain, if it belongs to someone else).

the data you enter on this page is you FTP logins, so save them.

Once you're done & saved everything, open your favorite ftp client and login with the following:

host: [your server ip, given by data center]
user: Username (from last page we were on in WHM)
pass: same as above, only for password
port: 21 (check with your host to make sure they don't automatically change the ftp port, if you cannot login!)

that should do it. That is how I created my first ftp account on my new server.

If you do not have cpanel from [cpanel.net...] - what do you have, specifically? Some control panels are different from the brand "cpanel"

Your ISP is your friend. Use them. The company I use gives me so many "free credits" of their time a month. I use them to help me get all sorts of things setup on my server.

If you do not know what you are doing, it might be best to let them get you setup, and then ask for a list of the things they did to the server so you know for next time.

Jake, you nailed it perfectly..I wish I had gotten that info sooner! I figured it out at about 4am, got to throw up some redirects, and then get to sleep. With FTP working I'm back in my comfort zone.

I did email the ISP but they weren't much help; maybe I wasn't getting across that I just wanted a FTP account for my IP.

I think a lot of ISPs just immediately assume every customer is in-the-know, like they are. So they immediately assume your request is more complex than it really is - the thought of the simplest answer never seems to cross their mind!

Also check out the Security Center in WHM.

You can deny access to outsiders trying to crack your ftp data (how a lot of servers have allegedly gotten hacked lately).
