I am currently hosting my site on a shared server hosting provider that only costs about 7 bucks a month.

The problem is that recently I shot up to 40,000+ uniques a day and it's knocking down my site because of an overload of CPU memory(chat scripts). I'm not sure how to measure CPU memory or what switching to a dedicated server would help provide. Any suggestions?

you're on shared hosting now; you have to share the server power with many other users. a dedicated server of your own means you DON'T have to share the power.

do you have any revenue from your site? could you afford a server of your own?

do you expect the traffic to stay that high?

With that traffic you should be able to spare $200+ for a good dedicated server
if not then you have a real problem: How to (monetize) turn a large profit out of such a traffic
