Legalities of Embedding Videos

I was just wondering if somebody could explain to me the legalities of embedding videos on your blog that are hosted elsewhere. If it is copyright material and you embed a video, but the video is hosted elsewhere, is that illegal?

I know it is a bit of a sketchy sounding question, but I am honestly curious. I have seen other sites do this without a problem for quite some time, yet there have been some big name sites, tv named ones imparticular, that I recall being shut down for a bit.

Maybe this article would shed some light on the issue. I'm not sure if the points made there apply to you as I think that the location where your blog is hosted matters.
