Could use some help

I know something about web development but not too much, either.

I'll start with this short story about my sister:

My sister and I attended the same community college; I was eighteen, and she was twenty-eight. She had not been in the class room for quite some time.

I remember her coming home one afternoon with a woeful look on her face. She found out that some of her time in college that year would be spent in remedial math classes and spending time with tutors, who for the most part where college kids younger than her. She attended her Algebra I class earlier that day. The instructor exclaimed, "since you all know what is in chapter one, we shall skip and start with chapter two in the book." She didn't know chapter one! As I said, she had not been in a class room for a time at that point in her life. The good news is she finally got through college!

As the story of my sister relates to me: I know some things about website development, but I am still quite a novice. For example; I installed the phpbb forum. My webhost does not provide support for that "add-on" they provided a link for (which is confusing to me). [webfool scratches his head]. The tech support person I spoke with directed me to visit a website that had a faq section that was considered basic. Now I know how my sister felt that day. As basic as that was, it was still a foreign language to me.

I have made much progress since the days of my first personal home page. Do any of you still remember your first personal home page - lol! Mine was through angelfire. I visited html goodies, webmonkey, et al. I still remind myself of that creation. I also know I have been back to the chalkboard many times over and over.

I do not develope websites full-time. I am a minister. that is my day job, so to speak. I won't be trading up that role. So, my time is limited. Where can I find basic help in the next steps I make in my ability to develope websites?

Thanks in advance for any pointers.

I had an easy start with html as in my mainframe days I had used markup based editors. With an understanding of the basic layout concepts (lists, paragraphs, fonts, headers etc)it took my about 2 or 3 hours to learn enough to build a simple page thanks to Webmonkey.

After than I found some better tutorials and gradually reworked things to build in some "advanced" stuff like pictures and a coloured background. I finally learned enough to get the site onto page 1 of some relevent Google searches.

I have always extended site functionality in "bite sized chunks" so that I have only ever needed to extend my knowledge by a little at a time. I Google for tutorials and if it looks too complex for the moment then maybe the site isn't ready for it.

One thing when posting questions on forums is make any limitations known up front. The replies here for example mostly seem to assume that you are managing your own server.

W3C Schools [w3schools.com] is one good resource. You've already found the other, welcome aboard. :-)
