I can't find a hosting company that will accept a .de website. I tried three hosting companies, all of which claimed they could do it, but when I tried to switch the name servers, I got a message from the registrar saying the name server changed failed because the name servers must pass certain tests before being accepted by domain registries.

I never got this message for any other domain, including .es, .fr and .it domains. Only .de domains.

Does anyone know of a company (with an English language website) that can host a .de domain?

The problem is not the host itself, but the DNS. For .de domains, the DNS of the domain name must be configured so that it can pass the registry's zonecheck requirements. In short, 3 servers of 2 different C classes are required.

If your preferred host cannot fulfil these (fairly minimal) requirements, then you can use your domain registrar's DNS (if available) or a third-party DNS provider.
