Moving site to another host

Who pays to move a web site to another host?

Our host of 5 years is crap now. Our client's site has grown to be very large and complicated. We need to move it to another host so that we can get the service and dependability we deserve. Who pays for this? OR How can I present it to the client to where we share the burden of the cost for the move. Some issues we've had are email not working, DB connectivity, site being off-line, slow response from tech support, hackers in the site...

They should be happy to move to another host, pricing is such that it shouldn't be a burden.

present it as such, stay with the garbage host and have issues, or move to sombody that will fill your needs and leave the problems behind.

The choice is pretty obvious if they care even 1% about their site. The cost should be a second thought, to the need to move away.

best of luck!

The client pays. And should be happy to be successful enough that the upgrades are necessary. Client should also pay for your consultation and preparation; detailed assessment of what is needed and why; specific recommendations, timelines.....implementation.....the whole shebang. It's business, and you have all worked hard to be in a position where upgrades are essential. Make it a positive situation.

What is the relationship that the burden should be shared?

Sounds like a big time catch up situation, and that that this should already be done or well in the works. Taking the lead and demonstrating command of the situation is a big plus for you.

Have a tangentially similar situation with a client myself. Doing high six figure business on $100 a year server. Every few months the email servers are down, or the site is down, security breach, or who knows what. Springing for the cost of what is needed versus expectations are way out of sync; so have not had much choice but to let the situation simmer. Nothing will happen until there there is a catastrophic failure, and just don't have much choice but to stay out of the way until that time. Sad thing is that enough sales/money and time/energy has been lost 'here and there' to have already paid for a top-tier setup a year or two in advance.

Thanks...you've been a great help! Yes, this is a big client...franchisee client with 25+ franchisee sites to boot. After we move them we are going to introduce security and new features that our new host provides. Thanks again.
Anyone else want to boost my spirits?
