how can you prevent this from happening?

This is a topic I've not seen discussed yet...
If someone dislikes your site for some reason, what are some common ways they try to harm it?

I would think contacting your advertisers; contacting your host/domain registrar would be two ways, but what else?

Slandering you on the internet?
Illegal ways?

OTOH... what are some ways to get a site that is clearly plagiarising/copying images/text off your site to be shut down? I know, contacing horse, DCMA, etc... but what are some other ways?

Well, I did have this happen to me once :(
I had a forum that was hacked many years ago and have since then changed to a different type of forum and have a server that does updates daily.
I have everything backed up so hopefully this will never happen again.

one could easily setup a number websites under different domains and duplicate the "target's" content on each of those... then contact g and say the "target" is in violation due to duplicate content...

there are number of things one could do to hurt another..

- page jacking
- click fraud (if they have adsense)
- server hacks
- negative/fake reviews and opinions of ones products/services

contacing horse, DCMA, etc..

Contacting a HORSE? Why not contact an ELEPHANT, or a TIGER, or a LION?

Any software you install like forum software is going to have knoswn vulnerabilities at some point or another whether its open source, paid for or whatever. phpbb got a reputation for having a lot of holes and maybe rightly so, however every mention I've seen about a phpbb forum getting hacked was those with outdated versions. Usually very outdated versions.

You need to keep up with the updates no matter what you are running and you greatly reduce the risk of getting hacked unless you are one of the unlucky few that gets hacked with a new exploit.
