FTP folder refresh "Waiting Acknowledgement" problem

FTP hangs for six minutes each time folder refresh is done.

Recently I fail to refresh folders on almost all my servers, FTP hangs instead after the LIST command. I made some changes to passive mode & firewall settings, now it will respond to the list command and get the list of files from the server directory but then it hangs for six minutes on :

<ACTV> Waiting Acknowledgement

After six minutes it either gets a 226 Transfer complete or connection failed.

I cannot wait six minutes per folder refresh.

I can copy files down and up to the server which includes an acknowledgement step that is not delayed at all, it is only after I refresh a folder that the computer hangs for six minutes on waiting acknowledgement.

The FTP program support people tell me they think it is a server issue, the server people tell me it is a FTP software issue.

Anyone else come across this?

Any suggestions to resolve it?

FTP Client is Terrapin FTP & platform Win98ME

But I have fixed the problem now. I switched to passive mode, changed socket settings to so keepalive keepalive, played with my firewall and then turned passive mode off again and all of a sudden everything seems to work again now. Don't completely know why!
