Whenever I get a new email, I have it play a sound, but sometimes I'm out of the office and don't hear it...

Then I'll come back to my desk and forget to check for new email.

I'm wondering, is there any way to make a blinking icon in the taskbar that you have a new unread mail, or have something permanently show on the desktop until you read it? Or something like that?

If you have an outlook icon in your taskbar by the clock, right click it and see if there is an option that says "Show new mail desktop alert"
That way, a little envelope will appear next to your icon, therefore letting you know you have a new email.

Drag the "Unread Mail" folder to your Favorite Folders area. That will track how many unseen messages you have.
