Strange redirection thing for SEO?

Once a client sat down with me and wanted me to make a Web site about widgets. He showed me a competitor's site and it started making an annoying noise. I quickly learned that it somehow kept reloading/redirecting pages very rapidly, and this caused the client's laptop with Windows to make a clicking noise.

What could be the point of this seemingly pointless redirecting? The client thought it was some sort of SEO thing. I had no idea and still haven't. Ideas?

Internet Explorer has a set of default noises it makes when it performs certain actions. It could have been redirections or pop-ups being blocked or any number of things.

Try accessing the site with FireFox and use the Live HTTP Headers add-on to see what's happening.
