Securely log into website via FTP on wireless connection?

It is suggested that if you're using a wireless connection to ONLY post private things through secure (https) forms.

Can this be done via ftp too? I am using cuteftp and for the life of me I cannot figure out how to log in securely. I just use the basic login form by entering hostname, user & pass; etc.

Is this something I'd have to set up on the server-end, or does the ftp client have an option?
