Just out of curiosity:

1)Is the internet2 going to be available anytime soon or is it one of those 'maybe never' projects?

2)How would it change the www? If my understanding is correct the internet is really just the infrastructure on which the world wide web exists. Would an 'internet2' change anything about the web as we know it these days? other than making access faster?

Try [internet2.edu...]

(Mods:I assume that this URL is permissible?)

They describe what they do as

"Internet2 members leverage our high-performance network infrastructure and extensive worldwide partnerships to support and enhance their educational and research missions. Beyond just providing network capacity, Internet2 actively engages our community in the development of important new technology including middleware, security, network research and performance measurement capabilities which are critical to the progress of the Internet."

I read that a couple of times and I understood the words but real meaning escapes me! The home site has a PR of 9 so someone thinks they are important. Can any one explain in plain English what it is?

that site is for a well linked corporate/university partnership so no pr surprises there.

my question wasn't about the site but rather about the concept as posited by the OP.

I remember hearing about this years ago. This was pre-Web 2.0 My impression of the idea was that 'internet 2' was going to be this super-charged internet led by universities where high res video, etc would be the norm.
Instead apparently what we got was a corporate led internet with little utube videos and tons of ads ;)
