Hi all.

Our company is based in the UK, though our 90% of our customers are in the USA.

We are about to move over to a new provider for our dedicated server (IIS) and need to consider if there is any value in hosting in the USA rather than the UK. We are considering that this could offer us:

a) Faster internet access for our USA clients
b) Cost advantage due to $/£ exchange rate

Has anyone else in the UK moved over to a USA based server configuration?

I have hosted with a number of companies...

I went from Canada hosting to US hosting... better prices and more reliable. I use dedicated servers from maximumasp. Costs about $400/month but you get every penny of that back in high quality service... unless you know what those guys know about data centres and stuff... how much is your time worth?

Just my experience...

The previous company I worked for hosts the website in the US, and he service is pretty good. The company is UK based in Gloucester.

We host our new website in the US as well, cheaper ,reliable and faster

Mod note: Please, no specific hosts.

What are the advantages of disadvantages of hosting in the UK, US, Canada, etc?

Are there any other countries that offer tech and cost benefits?

In the beginning I hosted on shared hosting in the Netherlands, but currently my two dedicated servers are in the US. Within a few weeks however a third server will go live back here in the NL again.

Main reason for hosting in the US is price, and the availability of 24/7 technical support. My third server will be again in the Netherlands, mainly because there are some special technical needs. To adapt it fully to the application, I will have to build the server myself and colocate it. Most users of that server are in the NL/DE region. Having short roundtrip times is better for the user experience and in the past I have had problems with unstable trans-atlantic lines (although reliability of the trans-atlantic lines seems to have improved in the last few years).
