What is a preferred file format for archiving content?

I have a website that was produced with MSFrontpage. The content was copied and pasted directly to the .html page and I would like to save this content seperate from the actual webpage.

If I were going to transfer this information to someone in the future, which file format would be the more widely used way save it? It may later be used in a database or put into another type of program I'm unfamiliar with.

I would store the contents in a .xml or in a .txt file format.
