My Domain & Hosting Company Is Down

Hello,

I'm not very good with webmaster stuff. That's why I used a company that does all the registering, hosting, etc. for me. And I've been happy for 2 years. But for weeks now that company's website is down (without prior notice!) and when I send an email to their support desk, I get:

PERM_FAILURE: SMTP Error (state 13): 550 Requested action not taken: mailbox unavailable or not local

So I guess something's wrong. Otherwise, my website and FTP are still working. But I can't access my Control Panel on the company's website. Actually, my website is on ehost-servicesBLAHBLAH.com, which is not that company's address, so I guess they're using a 3rd-party hoster?

Anyhow, I fear that soon my website will become unavailable too. So my question is: how to transfer to another hosting company, if my current hosting company is gone?

When I do WHOIS on my website (that's about the only technical stuff I know), it says:

Sponsoring Registrar:eNom, Inc. (BLAH-BLAHBLAH)
Status:CLIENT TRANSFER PROHIBITED

I guess eNom is a 3rd-party register, because I've never heard of them before. Otherwise, the domain is registered to my name and to my email, so at least I have proof it's my website. But how and to whom do I claim my website? Also, once I've "claimed" it, can I get another company to take over that domain, and do all the configuring, hosting, etc. for me, without technical hastles?

Thank you in advance for any information!

Hi Majstora,

Enom is a huge registrar. :)

The first thing they want you to do, if you're going to move your domain and didn't register the name yourself, is contact the reseller who registered the domain name for you. If you go to their help section, they have a place where you can get the contact information for the reseller.

It's also possible to find a new hosting provider who will help you through all of this.

I hope things work out for you.

Hi Beth,

Thanks for your reply! Indeed, I went to eNom's help section and used their "Reseller Information Retrieval Tool". Thus, I got confirmation that they were my registrar. Then I contacted eNom's support, telling them that my reseller is gone. And they replied pretty quickly, saying that I can also access my account through their site, with the same user name and password as with the reseller. So now everything's solved!

On the legal side, I read carefuly eNom's reseller agreement and it says, among other things: "If you die or otherwise become unavailable (the Backend Service Provider is unsuccessful in making reasonable attempts to contact you), and if you have customers and/or Sub-Accounts, the Backend Service Provider may assume direct control over such customers and Sub-Accounts." So they did made provisions for such situations.

Thanks again. Merry Christmas!
