Portals still ok to develop?

I have three websites, two of them do ok, and one does really well in terms of revenue. I started developing a fourth site that deals with entertainment. Today I thought to myself why not consolidate these sites into the one that generates the most money and develop a portal. The sites are different, covering different themes except for the one that makes the most money. That site has a general theme and already covers different topics.

The idea for consolidation including the site that's being developed is to create a mega-site and possibly create greater value to the existing visitors and potentially generate more traffic and revenue for that one site.

In a world where things are splitting off into specific niches is there still room for a site that offers a multitude of features and services? Is it worth developing the general themed site by adding different features to the site?

Your opinions are greatly appreciated.

Spread the wealth out. One major boo-boo and you wipe it all out if you consolidate it.

I had a small site which I wasn't updating anymore, and a new site. both were entertainment related. I decided to merge the small one into the new one. The new one incorporates the small site which is being revamped as a result.
So I think it depends on the case. In this case it made sense for me. But I wouldn't have a mega-site about "everything", that wouldn't make sense to me.
My site is related to similar topics in entertainment, not anything..
