What is and isn't acceptable in terms of using unique meta keywords for different pages in the metakeywords tag?

1. Let's say I have a different page about one topic for 10 different cities. For the sake of example, we'll use "seo."

Can I have "baltimore seo" and other variations on the Balitimore page? And then "chicago seo" and other variations on the Chicago page?

What will Google frown on in regards to excessively specific meta keyword tags for each individual pages?

I'm not going to be adding tons of keywords, I just am wondering about very very specific keywords for each individual page?

Welcome aboard intlmastermind, you needn't worry much about the meta keywords tag, it is largely ignored. Focus your attention on working the keywords into your title and description element and tags, and in the content on the page.

After your advice, I did some research and apparently the meta keywords tag is dead.

I haven't built a site since 2001, so I'm a bit out of the loop. I'm still an "old school" webmaster trying to get back into it.

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, the meta keywords tag is largely dead - today. But who knows about tomorrow?

It does no harm to use the tag, and it's a lot easier to add the tag when creating pages than doing it at some later date.

I recommend not to forget totally of meta keywords, but not focus your site on that, as my partner says be focus on the title tag and the description, but also keep track of the main keywords used in your content.

I read that it can do you harm if you use the tag in a "spammy" way.

That was my concern and the reason of my OP.

Anything can harm you if you use it in a spammy way! I limit myself to just a few keywords, and never include one that does not appear on the page.

I re-read your OP. I can't see anything wrong with having "baltimore seo" as keywords on a page about Baltimore SEO, or "chicago seo" on the Chicago page. The keywords should be specific to the page.

The use of "seo" on all pages shouldn't be a problem, providing "seo" occurs on the page.

IMHO

It could be my failing memory but I have a recollection that meta keywords are used by the Adsense bot.

I have also seen suggestions, already mentioned, that misuse can have an adverse effect on search engine rankings.
