I want to start a new website that is a webdirectory and i was wondering if there is any open source platform that can be used for this purpose and would save me some time in development and design.

thanks

I don't know about open source - but there's plenty of freeware models - and for a few dollars more, there's a range with much more manoeuvrability.

Plenty of flexibility under $50.00

I haven't seen it lately, but wsnlinks used to be a very flexible php program; easy to personalize for non-techs like me, and - I am told - easy to adapt in the hands of a PHP proficient person.

But that's just one, and I'm not saying it's the best ... there's loads out there.

There are a little hard to find - searching for [directory] produces all manner of unwanted stuff!
