Is there a trend?

Is there a trend of where google picks it's news articles from? I have always wondered but have not come up with any conclusions. The alerts we sign up for are from blog websites but google must have a select few which it regularly refers to for specific subject areas.
Does anyone have this list?

Google contacted some sites to arrange access, they added some sites on their own, and if you submit your site to the service they will consider adding it. I think the third route is now the more common, major outlets being mostly included by this point.

If this is the case how do I get hold of the websites google have already listed and is partnering?

I doubt they will tell you, but the only source is Google themselves. You could potentially monitor all the news for a month and log every publication covered...
