I've never trusted ITR to be accurate. Their FAQs reveal precious little about their methodology, so one can only guess.
It appears on the surface, though, that they simply ping routers around the world from the U.S. (Look at the ping times - they are short for the U.S. and correspondingly longer for other parts of the world.) There is a statement on the site that they ping from "several servers around the world" but the data doesn't back that up.
If ITR themselves has a connectivity problem, it's erroneously reported as an overall Internet connectivity problem.
Is there some site that does this in a more accurate way?
At first, we thought it was our cable modem company. But I heard of others in the area, using other ISP companies, experiencing the same problems. And I've heard chatter on various boards of folks from across the US having problems.
Doesn't matter the browser, the time of day, or the website. We frequently have to keep hitting fresh just to get the site/page to load. Many times, we have to just come back later to that site.
It's been very annoying and for many days, it has kept me from doing work for my clients because I couldn't access their site in any way.
I hope that whatever is causing these problems will get fixed soon.
