im currently starting work on a project to teach people the interworkings of widgets, to help them get a job working with them. And pass tests to get certified working with them.

I can dish this information out in the form of a 200 or so page e-book, and sell that.

Or I could lay less detailed information out on a website for adsense $.

OR maybe a combo of both with a "tips" website which squeeze visitors to build a list then push them to daily tips online with adsense embeded, then try to sell the full e-book while they are in my autoresponder.

It really depends on your market. If you put up a dozen pages and get some blog / link buzz to them you'll get your answers from that. Lots of traffic, natural links appearing, and you'll be certain that you should put the whole thing online for free with advertising. Bit of a damp-squib, not much traffic, but some glowing reviews from real specialists and you'll know that the sale-per-visitor model is likely to bring the better long-term result.

Another important thing to ask yourself is whether there are going to be good adverts in your sector, which would be of interest to your target audience.

Bear in mind that if you provide a few hundred pages which people should follow online, they will be ad-blind by page 5 or 6.

if I was going to dish it out in a page by page i was going to dilute content a little bit and create more of a "tips" website where I would collect info then feed them daily tips in e-mail format, which had 1 to 2 page tips with ads built into them.

( you know...sign up no for free tips on blah blah blah) squeeze page style

that way i build a lead list that i could sell my whole ebook, and/or other products to.

blogging would be the best thing to go for. You can do the adsense part while participating in social networks and bookmarking sites. This will create a powerful buzz network which is what you need I guess.
