Airwaves Spectrum Sale Could Raise $20 Billion

The Federal Communications Commission on Friday said the much-anticipated sale of airwaves spectrum will begin Jan. 16.

In a statement late Friday, the FCC said the sale of 62 megahertz of prized airwaves will begin in mid-January. Congress had mandated that the agency begin the auction before the end of January.

The sale could raise as much as $20 billion, according to some estimates. The revenue must be delivered to the U.S. Treasury no later than the end of June.
