Since going to press Skype has issued the following statement: "UPDATED: Some of you may be having problems logging in to Skype. Our engineering team has determined that it's a software issue and hopes to have this resolved quickly.

"Meanwhile, you can simply leave your Skype client running and as soon as the issue is resolved, you will be logged in. We apologize for the inconvenience."

That'll be the little grey thing circling round in my Start toolbar then. Glad it wasn't me. I thought someone had hijacked my machine to make skype calls.

So that was it. Funny thing though - my brother was finally able to get back on early this afternoon (sitting at the desk right beside mine) and I'm still locked out...

Skype is still down in Asia. Getting as poor as Ebay and Paypal customer service now. Where is the next generation?

According to the NYT its a software error that has been dormant since 2003 and now for some reason made the Peer to Peer network to crash.

[nytimes.com...]

I only now have come to realize how dependent I am on Skype. I am cut of from my employees in my main office (have to use the good old telephone) and from the freelancers that work for me in different countries. And actually I just realized that of some of them I do not even have a phone number...

If this persists for another day I will have to reinstall ICQ or MSN Mesenger (do they still exist?)

Yes - I just blew the dust off of trillian - I too have guys I work with that use Skype as their primary source of communication.

I'm not really ticked off or anything, but I really wonder how this got where it is

One side note:

Do the status updates seem a bit vague to anyone else? It's almost like the calls you get about a sick loved one..

Things are looking a little better, there have been signs of improvement, etc.

The closest we get is "deficiency in an algorithm within Skype networking software". I wonder when the dificiency was introduced, and other geeky things like that.

I see a total lack of phrases such as "We've identified the problem, it was x,y,z" and "Our latest push of the fix has proven to fix the intial issue, but there are still.."

Again, I'm not ticked - I don't pay anything for the software, It's just kinda weird..

I know companies that use skype numbers for incoming calls.

They are getting no business whatesoever for the last 2 days.

This is a BIG problem.

Some are speculating that the reason it's taking them so long to get back is they're trying to restore their most recent database backup. Wouldn't it be something if they've lost the entire user database and everyone has to re-register?

Better than if the entire user database has been stolen or illegally copied...

I wish they'd come out with some statement that actually make sense. So far everything has been kind of this plastic-smile, "It's-not-as-bad-as-you-think-it-is" kind of stuff. But this is obviously very serious at some level or another.

Mhmm. I am logged into Skype again. Unfortunately so far no one else on my Skype contacts is. So not much use. Maybe I could talk to myself for a while...

According to Skype, they will make a full statement on the issue on Monday.

Speculation of Skpe being hacked has been denied by Skype, however, they have actually said very little detail so far.

Well I have not had a problem over the past few days but I did notice that when I ran a 'check for updates' from within Skype there were some hotfixes available.
