Shared vs Dedicated: Better bang for the buck?

Hey Everyone --
I recently got hired on as the technical coordinator for a marketing/hosting/development company.

I am just getting to learn the ropes of their setup but at the moment it appears they are using a combination of shared hosting and dedicated servers to deliver the content to the customers. The tech person in charge now is in a migration phase to move the clients on the dedicated hosting over to a shared environment ( I'm assuming because the dedicated hosting is expensive).

I am looking for opinions here I guess -- in that I haven't worked for a company before that was hosting this many sites (400+ as far as I can tell) but it seems that at a certain point it would be more economical to just get dedicated servers and skip the shared hosting concept. They require Coldfusion backend for many of the sites they develop so maybe this was a cost issue.

Any comments, feedback about experiences in this situation would be great!

Thanks!

Welcome to WebmasterWorld elandru.

The dedicated vs. shared [google.com] debate is one we've had before. In your case though it seems that with so many sites the dedicated option would be smarter. However, there may be some other rationale behind this decision. You should ask.
