Why does Alexa.com seem to run very slow at times and also seem to go down more than it should, for such a prominent site?

Well, I guess prominient was not the right word. I just was wondering what is up with them.

I guess I am naive, but does everyone hate Alexa? I think Alexa is useful. I must be out of the loop. Someone please fill me in. Is there another site out there that gives the same type of information?

The Alexa data is compiled from those that have the Alexa toolbar installed. The traffic it reports is only from Alexa users.

So where else can give me a position ranking for a site?
The biggest problem with Alexa is that it can be spammed to raise your ranking.
I proved that about a year or two ago by setting up a keyboard macro to keep going to a couple of our sites every few seconds.
With 2 days they went from something like #334,948 to around #1400

"Prominent" is completely the right word. It's owned by Amazon, for freak's sake, of course it should be up and running reliably. It's an amazing source of free info, but you can't just read the numbers uncritically.

Compete has been my favorite for a long period of time. I would definitely recommend them.
