Saw a comment in another thread that someone
loathed Yahoo's web based e-mail. They didn't say
why.
I'm curious what the astute folks here prefer for
both their personal and business e-mail -- and why?
Feel free to blast what you don't prefer, too! That
might help others avoid problems you've dealt with.
Thanks,
Louis
I like using a desktop-based email client because I don't have to put up with garbage mail from a "free" email provider, don't have to actually be online to read my mail, and generally have greater control of spam filtering and custom configuration settings. Also, if you use your email for anything confidential or important, it's much more secure to download it to your HD than to leave it on a 'free email' host's servers.
Web-based free email accounts, IMO, are useful mainly as spam-catch adresses to use when filling out questionable forms on the web.... but that's what I use my ISP email account for now.
With your own domain/hosting/email account, reconfiguring your email like that is no problem.
What about people who wish to monitor their e-mail away from home are have to use public computers?Sure, but even if you're using an email client on your PC for regular use, you can use a web mail interface when you're travelling. These days most ISPs and web hosts have them available for you already, and there are also webmail sites that will check email on any pop account.
So my approach: I use The Bat as my email client, set to delete messages from my various pop accounts after 30 days (one of the programs greatest strengths is how it handles multiple accounts). Some of the accounts forward everything to one "catch all" account so that if I have to I can find anything important in one place. And when I'm travelling I just a webmail interface. Actually, sometimes I just telnet to the shell and use pine instead... so yeah this is probably all more complex than it needs to be!
I understand one does get some spam, but doesn't
everyone also get it at their me@mywebsite.com address, too?
Moreover, I'm not trying to advocate for or against
the freemailers like Yahoo -- just want to understand
*why* the dislike. For instance, banning everyone
with a yahoo address? Isn't that extreme? Or do
I simply underappreciate the server load you all
deal with from the spammers who use yahoo accounts?
Why the disdain?
Thanks for sharing,
Louis
