Parody accounts at twitter are to be banned without notice unless they clearly display parody status, and changing names will mean temporary loss of the blue check mark.
Going forward, any Twitter handles engaging in impersonation without clearly specifying “parody” will be permanently suspended

i.e., "free speech", but only after specifying how the listener should feel about it?

May be because of this :

Comedian Kathy Griffin suspended from Twitter after mocking CEO Elon Musk
Griffin used her "Elon Musk" account Sunday to urge Americans to vote for Democrats in the midterm elections Tuesday to preserve abortion rights.

putting your own words into other people's mouths isn't free speech. she could have said whatever she wanted as herself, but she pretended to be him

That's one way to look at it.

If someone takes your identity stopping them is not anti free speech though. Mrs Griffin was free to say whatever she wanted, as herself. She wasn't reprimanded for her words but for changing her name to Elon Musk, while having a blue checkmark no less.

You can still take Elon's name if you want but mark the account parody so nobody thinks you're him, it doesn't get more free than that, imo.

Just wait 90 days and see what happens when people snap up the names angry celebs are ditching. Whoopi Goldberg deleted her account, for example, and it will be free to register in 90 days. Will mayhem ensue? The name isn't as important as the url, should they be retired on deleted accounts? They aren't right now....

Perhaps permanently retiring a URL on account closure should be a perk of having paid for a blue checkmark, who knows.

Tip: If you're disgusted with Twitter just turn the tweets private and stop using Twitter, Don't give up your url, it makes taking your identity and fooling others easier.

he went from a self-proclaimed “free speech absolutist” in April to his tweet on October 28:
Comedy is now legal on Twitter

10 days later tho...

How does getting in trouble for taking another person's identity have anything to do with free speech? I'm not following.

This was resolved at least... 6 years later. [huffingtonpost.co.uk...]

I agree with that. I don't even understand why so much people are shocked and complaining.

It's the way it was done is the problem. Well, it's no longer a problem as it's done.

He's running the show fully hands on, and that's his way. Not always the best way, but perfect for a smaller business. Some larger businesses would do better being a bit more agile.

I wonder how the investors are going to take all this.

Having monitored certain topics over time, twitter seems to have become a cess-pit of unpleasantness in some sectors. Some have upped their verbal aggression and unpleasantness without objectiveness. When criticism is constructive it's educational.
Free speech does not mean being nasty and unpleasant to others; that needs some attention, imho.
