Lost standings on all major search engines

I am semi-new to webmastering. I have gotten one of sites up on yahoo etc. to about number 5 and was number 15 on google with my keyword. My keyword can be used as one word or two. I have just changed to the two as it seems that it is used more for searches. Now my site is no where to be found in the top 100 on any SE. Have I hurt myself, or is this temporary? Any advise? Should I change back, wait, or give up because they won't take me back? Help!

Is not easy to reply to your questions as it depends the way you've made the changes and from how many time you did them.
If you better explain I could be more accurate to help you.
Anyway,generally is not adviceable to make changes without the "bless" of a good SEO software,but the situation could be less difficult than you think.
I would wait a month or so,than without results I would review my job.

when you say "for my keyword" are you talking only a single word? What does "my keyword can be used as one word or two?"

I'm an SEO, and I always caution against only using one word keywords...but we could prolly help you more if you were to give us more info...

My main keyword has been quarterhorses (which I decided to go back to). It can be used as quarter horses as well (which is more searched for). I have other keywords and phrases too. I have since gotten back up to 17 on google with the orignal keyword of quarterhorses. I am not sure why I was off the just a few days, but my site is back up. I am trying to learn new things. I used to use webposition gold, but cannot afford to keep it. So now I am out on my own. Thank you very much for all your help.

Many search engines recommend against webposition gold and programs that automate queries. I'm glad you're regaining positions. I think there could have been a minor update that people are seeing, and sometimes it just takes a few days for the results to adjust again. It's really important not to panic.

Kinda like the stock market: some days you lose money, but the big picture over a few months is what's important. You may see a dip, but there's no reason to panic and sell! :)
