Are Sponsored Links Tied to Organic Listings?

Let say a company buys a search term in yahoo. Do the organic search results change due the a new sponsored link being added? A friend of mine swears his website dropped from 3 to 44 in the organic listings after another compnany bought the search term.
Anyone have any experience with this or thoughts?

If you buy alot of ppc the search engine rep will take notice and give it a closer look. The chances of spam being found and seen as offensive increases. Also if you are spending big bucks, the engines are more open to receiving legitimate spam reports from you.

Interesting, so if I'm using ppc often my site will get more attention by the search engine for organic listings.

Attention does not mean you will get an increase in organic traffic. In my expereience attention is normally not a good thing.

Why is attention not a good thing? I would think the more people looking at you site determining rank the better.
