I have my site password protected while in development process for more than a year.
Will this have any effect on how search engines (Google in the first place) will treat the site when I remove password protection?

From what I understand your site will not be affected, although the spider will come to your site & get an error due to a password prompt. It will however be in google database & kept being spidered until it's able to get through your site.
you might want to try doing your url www.abc.com into google search box & see if your domain comes out.
If not when it's ready u can resubmit it & submit to directories to get that Pagerank up.

Is it .htaccess based password protection or what?
