Meta Tags?

The possible over-use of a particular word.

Hi all

I am trying to reorganizing our Meta Keywords as we are redesigning my homepage and would like to optimize things a little.

So far I have chosen 14 words.

My concern is this:
1. A particular word occurs 8 times amongst the keywords and phrases (k-w meta tags) that I have chosen -
Will the search engine that spiders our site lower the relevance of the meta tags?

2. A particular 2 word phrase occurs 5 times amongst the keywords and phrases (k-w meta tags)Again - will this be a problem for the search engine?

I must say that it is very difficult not to include the single recurring word (similarly the 2 word recurring phrase) as it is core to our business/category etc.

Would appreciate any help on this "science of meta-tag creation"

Regards

Welcome to WebmasterWorld, Cyanic123.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the metatag for keywords is all but extinct. However, a few smaller search engines may use them. THE most important is have the keyword or phrase in the domain name, title of page, H1, and the first sentence of the first paragraph of the page.

The general rule is to not repeat a word more than three times.

There is also much debate as far as using commas as separators, or just using spaces. I just use spacing myself, as this allows for multiple variations of the same phrase. For instance:

small business information - using this as a meta would allow searches for small, small business, business, information, and business information.

Hope that helps, WFN :)

Hi Web_Footed_Newbie

Thanks for your prompt help on the topic.

Although you say the use of meta-tags are redundant, I have picked up conflicting reports from all types of sources so I have decided to still use them and keep them as a priority.

But I hope to keep my optimization tactics in line with what you have suggested.
The domain name unfortuneately for our parent site is not keyword specific. In terms of placing it in the title of page, H1, and the first sentence of the first paragraph of the page - I aim to do just that.

Thanks for the help and I dig your alias!

WFN-

You mean repeat a word no more than three times in the same sentence, correct? What's your opinion on when a page starts to become spammy with word overuse? I get my two word key phrase in a page 15 times but, I wonder if that is approaching to much.

The general rule I was referring to about using a word 3 times is only in the meta=keywords.

As for the web page, using the keyword or phrase many times is good, this is known as keyword density. The keyword or phrase density should be 10 to 15 percent of all the text that appears on the page.

A good tool to measure keyword density can be found from here at WebmasterWorld's sister site, click on this link:

Hope that helps. Any other questions? WFN ;)
