A clean, usable site probably helped as much as our technology.
For what it's worth, I agree that search engines should have more sophisticated scoring using lessons from A.I. and machine learning
So when Google rolls out AI to evaluate web pages (or have they already done so) what is going to be important to rank well. I got to thinking about on page factors and what would be part of the scoring system. Here are some possibles:
Spelling-- mistakes would deduct
White space --clean & usable would be a positive
Complexity of text -- bigger words more complex?
Public keywords -- (what I mean by this is not the site's keywords but universal keywords, an example being "how to ")
Grammatical construct -- more complex gives bigger rank?
Importance of topic -- Some topics are always important some come and go, for example education is an always important topic and so sites authoritative for that kind of topic would rank better (we'll call this topic matching). Tyedyed shirts are only an important topic if that fad is underway so a site that is an authority on that will get a lift during the fad. (fads can be measured by monitoring repitition of common searches)
Other factors?
