I always wonder how much protection effect it really has for a Search engine to go for patents on search engine related algorithms.
How difficult is it to implement a variation of an algo, and how difficult is it to check what your competition is really using?
As a webmaster with an obvious interest in search engines workings, I find most valuable information on where algo's might go or be, in patents and university research papers.
