Importance of a domain name?

Does your domain name make a difference?

I'm thinking of buying new domains getting new graphics layout and content and reproducing the same service I provide under different domains for different areas. I'm in a very competitive market (vacation rentals) and our website covers a global market.
I currently have a PR6 and still only getting in the top 15-30 search results. We have 35,600 results on contain the term for our domain (www.xxxxxxx.com). And Google only sends us a maximum of 500 people a day.

Our current domain does not have the words "rentals" or "vacation" or anything to do with our service it is a abbreviation .com name. Would having something like florida-rentals.xxx make any difference? And does the extension matter i.e. .cc, .org, .biz, etc.. Also Is there a difference in having florida-rentals.xxx or floridarentals.xxx does the (-) have an effect?

It's just when I look at results for i.e. florida vacation rentals. Most of them have that or part of those keywords in there domain. This website has been running for 2 years now and always in good standing with all SE. But domains built on keywords or topic related seem to do better.

Thanks for your comments,

Ryan

Keyword rich domain names can make that extra little difference in very competitive areas such as yours. I have a client in the finanacial services market and nearly all the top companies, including my client use keyword domains.

In my opinion there is nothing wrong with having many sites all offering the same service/product as it is better to compete against yourself! All business's should be constantly trying to reinvent themselves to do things better for their customers and having more than one site allows you to do that.
