Visual Page Rank

How to define it?

Let's assume that a search in a directory is based on the visual appearance of a link to a web page. What are the best criteria for a "visual page rank" ? (not to be confused with a Google page rank based on interlinking).

My current working hypothesis of a visual page rank is in the following order:

- title (always visible, top of entry)
- description (always visible, bottom of entry)
- hover message (visible at mouse hover)
- news flash (visible icon, pop up window if clicked)
- author meta tag (not visible)
- keywords meta tag (not visible)

Is this a reasonable ranking?

Hello Go2,
I'm not clear on your post... are you refering to how a Directory listing should be displayed? In other words, the actual presentation using the items you listed as visual cues? (except the meta's of course...)

Visual Page Rank refers to the ranking of web pages as result of doing a search in a directory. VPR is based on the degree of visibility of a search word in a directory listing. Although there is no universal format for a directory listing, most directory listings have a title and a description. Some directories also offer a hover message, and a news flash icon. Some directories may also support definition of key words (as a meta tag).

For example, based on VPR, if the directory is searched for the word "apple" all pages containing "apple" in the title will be listed first, pages containing "apple" in the description will listed next, pages containing "apple" in the hover message will be listed after that, and so on.

The VPR is an integer number and for example a title match may be assigned a VPR of 10, a description 9, a hover 6, keywords 3 etc. By adding all VPRs for all search words in the query you get the total VPR for a web page listed in the directory.

Maybe this way of ordering search results has been discussed before, I just called this procedure "Visual Page Rank" since it really is based on search word visibility.
