submitting the same article to hundreds of article directories will decrease ranking in search engines as it seems as duplicating content? same article is going to listed in all directories.. what will search engines to with this?

I did a similar test. I submitted the same article to 100+ directories and waited for the result. After a week Google showed about 60+ sites that had my article. After two weeks that number dropped to about 10.
