I am looking for Industry wide number of searches done per month ...are there any avaliable ??
What i mean is lets say...Hosting industry...every month, how many searches are done on that in total across the web.
This would be particularly useful for me, since I am planning to start an Niche directory+ SE !
Please give me some pointers, if any such research is done, or if any one of you have a vague idea..just post the numbers !
Thanks much
:)
You would need to compare and add search queries like
hosting (with and without "quotes")
hosting industry (with and without "quotes" or +)
industry hosting (with and without "quotes" or +)
hosting services (with and without "quotes" or +)
services hosting (with and without "quotes" or +)
cheap hosting (with and without "quotes" or +)
hosting service cheap (with and without "quotes" or +)
reliable hosting (with and without "quotes" or +)
and mis-spelled words and the list goes on
try Google AdWords - setup a free account - type in "hosting" for keywords
and then google will allow you to diversify keywords that were used in conjunction with hosting as well as thesaurus "web site host" "virtual IP" etc.
Good Luck

What I do, as a benchmark, is look at a keywords position in a big directory like ODP. If you know the #1 site gets X amount of visitors and is top in that directory, you know you won't be far off if you have a site in mind thats going to compete.
There are a few ways to determine traffic for keywords...more than one way to skin a cat so to speak! But its debatable if any of them are accurate
I understand, its going to be difficult to get such accurate stats industrywise.Okay, I feel, it can be much similiar to gett visior log files on our web sites...may be i can say, extended version of such an application for SE's.
Probably, all major SE's themselves might be having such stats..Just that add them up to get a pproximate number/percentage. But i don't see any SE publishing such industry wise stats.
As you suggested, I can try adowrds, overture and many other tools, but, it doesn't give me the complete picture ??
thanks again
