Advertising on Blogs?

Asking about the path to take for blog advertising

As I am sure many of you were, I was recently at the Webmaster World Conference in Las Vegas. There was some dicussion about advertising on Blogs and I wanted to try it out.

I spoke to two companies:

<blog advert company A> and <blog advert company B>. I was wondering if anyone out there has had any success with these tools. They seem cheap and the value of the life long link to our site seems to be worth it?

Is it?

In the past, blog comments were an easy way for people to get link power in Google. Due to massive abuse, search engines try not to give weight to blog comments any more. Some people still try to put link comments in a great many blogs, in order to get some benefit from the small proportion that still count.

The newer blog advertising companies are placing links in the blog posts themselves, which historically have been treated as normal links in search engines.

My understanding is that people are getting success from the approach. Over time, if a large proportion of blogs carry text adverts I would expect the engines to reduce the benefit.
