Loading Time

Does external js add to loading time?

I understand there is a problem with SE robot crawling if a page takes too long to load.

I would like to add an external js file to my homepage that will load some large images. As it will be called by the onload() command, I'm assuming it should be ignored by the robots. Do they just wait for the html to load and continue on crawling or will this extra load time stop them in their tracks?

To my knowledge they don't request external file s at all. Therefore there shouldn't be any penalty time wise.
