just a couple of queries on the above:
1) is it really the case that index page is of hardly any value? Lots of searches i do on competitive keywords often have a top 10 full of index pages. I thought that the title tag on the index page for example was one of the most important tags?
2) subdomains v. subdirectories - isn't a problem with subdomains that, e.g. google, they don't keep the same link pop as the main domain. I have a few clients which i use subdomains for, but have had real problems getting these in google, as i can't get them in dmoz for example.
??!! Any responses?
One of the things to remember is, although your site is going to be small, make sure it has concentrated content.
If you are going to theme it, make sure it is themed well, and linked well.
Remember this: the SE's stay in business by providing good search results to their users. This means that your pages should be relevant to not only the keywords and description that you use, but to the other pages in the site. It should also be linked well as this gives the SE's something to feed on.
Go on with your move towards themes.....it is a good one.
very interesting discussion i should say...i am new here..started my research one week back....and have been continuously reading a lot...

1)Canonical – www or a themed keyword. You could combine 1 and 2 and use a separate domain.

I have understood almost everything being discussed here...
In the above mention...can you please tell me how can i combine 1 and 2...???
I shall get back soon here...
Thanks in advance...!!!
What I think of, as combining 1 and 2 is to actually set up a separate domain for that keyword. If you do this you'll want to be sure it has a different look about it and is very specific to that keyword, in terms of optimization and content. Basically instead of using a canonical on a domain designed around the keyword you would simply create a new domain.
Enjoy the reading, there's plenty here. I’m actually going back through it all myself now.
Thanks again...
Stay fabulous...!!!
Sorry for just posting these kudos... :) , Just incase i am diverting the discussion...!!!

For example, if the home page has a PR of 6, then all other pages at the root level have a PR of 5. Any pages one level down tend to have another point knowcked off, so they will be PR 4 and so on.
If we use a full three-tier pyramid, then surely we are knocking an extra 3 points of Page Rank off the most targeted pages? This will of course make it harder to get those pages to rank well in Google.
Or have I misunderstood?
I've seen evidence of both working.
I've encountered some sites ranking really well that have many links from unrelated sites. Other sites seem to be doing well linking to and from related sites.
Scenario 1 - All links are related
Scenario 2 - Various non-related links
Scenario 3 - Some related sites, other non-related sites
What works best?
So the index page link pop question was adressed above. I still think pages closer to the root win over the theme argument.
The idea of NOT linking to other pages in your site as it would dilute the theme ( keep it vertical ) may have a counter effect by making navigation for the user harder. Isn't one of the key elements of good web design to allow the user to get about?
Exlude the link to a 'side topic' and you exclude the page impression / potential sale.
