".co.uk" SERPs versus ".com" SERPs.

How is a web site classified?

Hi,

I've just found this site - this is my first post!

Something that has bugged me for ages is that our site doesn't show up in the SERPs when you search for UK results only.

For example, on google.co.uk we show up 8th for the phrase "(mod note:enter 3 keywords here)" if you select "the web", but if you search for the same term and select "pages from the UK" instead, we are no where to be seen!

We have a hosting company based in USA, so is that simply the reason? If so, would transfering to a UK server solve the problem?

We have registered our site under both ".com" and ".co.uk" names. At the moment, the ".co.uk" site simply re-directs to the ".com" site. Is this the best set up to keep?

I have been warned against simply copying the content of the ".com" site accross to the ".co.uk" site, in case it is classed as "duplicate content" by the search engines.

If any one can shed light on this topic I would be very grateful!

Thanks for reading my tired rambings.

Adam

Welcome to WebmasterWorld!

It's called geotargeting (check your favourite search engine for it) - and if you move your server you're good to go.

P.P.S. Having the same website under two different domains (com / co.uk) is considered "duplicate content" and will get at least one site penalized.

[edit reason] removed p.s. that has been resolved, thanks [/edit]

Thanks for your help - I'll google it right away!

Can any one tell me more about owning a ".co.uk" site and a ".com" site? Is the current re-direct from the ".co.uk" to the ".com" harming our search engine results, or helping them?

Instead, should we simply put some completely new content on the UK site, but link to the ".com" site?

Any advice would be gratefuly received!

P.s. sorry about the signature on my post above - I thought you'd want to go have a look. Won't happen again!
