Does anyone know if this is a legitimate agent? A search seems to indicate that it's a version of Java. In Latest Visitors, the log entry looks like:
Host: 79.116.30.*
/
Http Code: 200 Date: May 18 11:50:07 Http Version: HTTP/1.1 Size in Bytes: 31712
Referer: -
Agent: Java/1.6.0_04

Some RSS feed readers, for instance, are written in Java and the authors are either too lazy or ignorant of the user agent to change it.

Could be anything, including a link checker or bookmark checker, hard to know.

I'd be happy if languages refused to access the web unless the UA was set to something other than the default.

Thanks for the explanation. I was thinking about blocking it, but have decided not to do so unless it starts coming around too often.

In my experience, all Java bots from Romania are harvesters.

I block ALL occurrences of Java in any UA. For a few years I did allow a handful of beneficial ranges through, but the last couple years I see no need. Anyone using an out-of-the-box GET tool with the generic Java is 403'd.
