Meta tags - so last century.

....or still relevant today?

I keep reading conflicting thoughts about Meta tags.

Some people say that they are so last century and that the SE's don't bother reading them and then others say that they only read the description tag.

What is the truth about Meta tags? Which ones, if any, are relevant?
