Well, no need to do it as SEs will find you site themselves.
Concerning the second question, I'd say that in this world money can be done from anything including blogs. For example, if you get huge traffic one day, you can choose ads programs to participate in.

No need to submit - get a few inbound links from the blog directories you were nicely offered and the engines will find you.

Build up a user base that trusts you and trusts what you recommend. Utilize the blogosphere. Outside of the blogosphere, treat your blog like any other website as far as search engine promotion.
