How to properly <TITLE> you site?

I have noticed that many of the top ranking sites place their business name in the <title>. Lets use art for example. If the name of your site has the word "Art" or "gallery" in it thats great because it will only help. but what if your name has nothing to do with art . I made a fake one up for example.

I threw in (fine art gallery) in the end of it because obviously it is an art gallery. But if you are <titling> you have limitations of words you can fit in so what Im asking is should you waste precious space putting in your business name when you could be using that precious space to put in a generic title such as "Fine Art Gallery" that would help you more and then having more space to put in important keywords such as painting, contemporary art, sculptures,etc

Marketing i guess is important in the long run if you want someone to get to be able to remember your business name because if Mcdonalds never put their name on the box or on commercials then they would have had obviously a much bigger problem marketing. But google im assuming doesnt care about your business name when it comes to generating you traffic unless you have already spent millions in marketing your name out.

I also went to a keyword program and saw that my official business name was googled about 10 times a day worldwide (pretty pathetic) BUT major keywords were googled hundreds of thousands of times.

This to me feels like a waste to put my business name in the title,, Am I wrong about putting my busines name in the <title>?

But my site is a personal site from which I am not trying to sell anything and thus as I first said, a marketing post?

what do you mean by hierachy? i sell art so i have many pages. I know the definition of the work but not how to apply it to my site in titling?

For many business I also see this practice as a waste of space. If your aim is to become a huge "household name" (or if you already are one) then there is a certain value in either building or leveraging your brand. But other than that, there are better thing to do with the real estate offered by the page title.

For me, there is a simple question to answer: Will the business name help draw a click when the page title appears in the search engine results? If it will (maybe it is an intriguing name, or it's already well-known, or soon to be well known) then use it in the title tag. Otherwise, write a good title for the page itself, free of any concern that the world learn exactly "who" you are. Get the click and get the sale, that's my appraoch.

I would put your domain name or site name (whatever your brand). Many of the big sites are doing it. You have 60 characters including spaces that G will display before adding "..." but I am sure it can read at least 90.

It's also good to do a Google search on the proposed title for your web page and see what the competition is for the words in the title. That may cause you to rethink what you put in and in what order. If you do decide to change the order, then again do a Google search. You may be surprised what you get out of this process.
