2 medium or 1 large site?

I sell animal related niche products on two sites that I own.

In the last year I have acheived top 5 rankings give or take depending on the week for 1 of the sites. For the other site I have not done well at all. The competition is about the same.

Each site links heavily betwen the two.

Each site has roughly the same amount of incoming links from diffrent domains hosted on diffrent hosts that I control.

Should I cobine the two sites under the url of the one that ranks well and point all the links at the new pages. This will give me one larger site with more incoming links? Would this rank better?

The two sites are on the same type of topic. Such as dogs. One deals with cocker spaniels and the other deals with labs.

You can use both ways. But I prefer using two domains with two sites.

You can give links to these sites between on every page, and you can have the chance to get high rankings with different keywords to get more visitors.
