Website, Web site, or Web Site

confused :(

This is an important part of a 'keyword' phrase I'm targeting, and I can't decide what to do. I can't target all 3 (or even both of them) so I need your opinion. I don't need low results with 2 kw phrases, I need good results with 1.

Website always looked right to me. But the more I searched around and did KW analasys, the more I saw it a different way.

Web site and Web Site are simmilar, but can be treated different visually. But they are still 2 words. May be slightly more different to target, but I may also be able to pick up other KW phrases that simply involve 'site'.

So, 1 word or 2? 1 word or 2?

For all you SEO fiends, what's your opinion?

I just took a look at what Google and Yahoo results were on all three. If you search for "web site" {two words} then both Google and Yahoo both ask if you mean "website".

If you look in Overture's tool to find out how many searches were done on the word "website" you only get back results with "web site" in them.

I can only speak for my own habits, but when I type in something and Google or Yahoo says,

"Did you mean "widgets",

I always hit that link and let Google or Yahoo do a new search. I bet most people do the same thing.

My vote is “Website”.

idibidabah seems like an interesting example of language development.

2 years ago I had to answer the exact same question and found the "voting"
on the major SEs was quite close. Maybe slightly in favor of two words.
The more recent sites at the time were more likely to use the one word version

From your research CygnusX1 the winner is now clearly Website, which was the trend.
However, have just tried Website on three spell checkers and they have never heard of the word.

I have read that the proper terminology is

Web site

Always capital "W" as Web is a proper name, and it is a "site" (not proper) on that Web.

I don't remember where I read that, but I do remember that I believed it because it made so much sense.

I still optimize my site for all variations.

I would suggest you go to the Overture Search Term Suggestion Tool, or Word Tracker, and see which term gets the most searches.

Additionally, I would analyze the competition for each term and see which term you could more easily optimize for. However, you will probably notice that no matter which term you select they are all super competitive.

Keyword analysis is probably the best if you're thinking of SE's, and I haven't come across a SE yet that takes capital letters into account, so whether you capitalize or not will probably be up to a sense of writing style.

Wired magazine had told its readers for a long time that the words Web, Net, Internet and such should be capitalized - and they're somewhat seen on authorites on netiquette and such web culture stuff. Finally in August they decided this was silly, and I'm in wholehearted agreement, this world has too many caps already. The article: [wired.com...] . I personally think website makes a lot more sense than web site. The two tend to be spoken as one word, anyway.
